View Full Version : Posthypnotic suggestion and amnesia
Hi guys,
the new forum is awesome..congrats..
here is my question:
let say we have a man under hypnosis..then we tell him:
"when you wake up you will touch your nose with your left hand"
now we suggest that when he wakes up he wont remeber what happen during the session(amnesia).
Will he forget the above post-hypnotic suggestion as well or he will carry it out ?
hope this is not confusing thanx..

Exactly as stated I think he will still touch his nose.
Now it should be obvious that there are better ways to do a post hypnotic suggestion.
Hi Skip,
would you elaborate if not too complicated about the optimum way for a posthypnotic sugestion. Can we split it in 2 groups like direct sugestion and using a metaphors ?
And one more question Im currantly reading Transworks by Yapko what do you think about this book if you read it ?
thanx
sav
Any suggestion you give during hypnosis, will, in effect, be post hypnotic, or at least you hope it will. In this sense I am saying that all suggestions that carry over after the 'formal' trance state, into the waking state, are 'post hypnotic' suggestions.
You want the suggestions to be, 'in effect', or to affect behavior, after the hypnotic session is over. The difference between a good hypnotist and a parlor one, might be the percentage of his suggestions which are carried out.
The only question really, is whether or not there will be conscious recollection for what transpired during all, or part, of the trance state.
You can use direct suggestion to forget consciously, but to remember and fulfill unconsciously, suggestions.
You can create amnesia for the entire trance experience by immediately changing the subject, and discussing and asking about anything else, as they are comming out of trance.
You can use nested loops in metaphor, to create amnesia, for the work that occurrs within the loops.
Now without this getting into a primer about how to produce amnesia, or how to effect post hypnotic suggestion (recalled consciously or not), what is it that you are trying to accomplish, and specifically, why is it important to produce amnesia for the suggestions?

Hi sav,
A person came to you wanting your guidance in *undoing, or achieving, What* ?
and How did you consult with their sub-conscious, such that you decided producing "amnesia" for your suggestions is how you best help them ?

I am guessing that you have seen this done as a demonstration, and for this purpose it is valid. I see no valid use for such a suggestion in a theraputic session, unless it was important for some reason for the client not to remember instuctions yet carry them out....

I am fairly new to this forum. I would like to ask when do you give the post hypnotic suggestions. Also does the wordinghave to be in future tense or present tense. I am confused. I am taking a speech class and I want to be very comfortable as I give the speech. What kind of post hypnotic suggestions would I give myself so I can feel confident as I walk up to talk.

mollymae,
I suggest you do two sessions. In one, you give suggestions in future tense, in one you give them in present tense. And then decide what works better for you.
