View Full Version : Reiki Attunement - Convincing Self It Works

Hi,
I recently received a Reiki I attunement. It was a great two day experience, ritualistic, background information, meditating, and three attunements throughout the two days.
I've been excited about finally learning Reiki. A few people have told me about it and I really looked forward to using it. But when the actual attunement happened, I didn't feel anything.
The only sign was tingling in hands after working on my first recepient for a few minutes, but it was the same kind of light tingling that I get when at times when my hands are just hanging to the sides. I'm aware of this feeling b/c sometimes in social situations I don't know where to place my hands, so I'm aware of of them hanging, thinking about it magnifies the tingliness. The same thing happened while channelling the energy, so I can't call that out of the ordinary. (In fact, as I type, I think about tingling, I can feel it in my fingers, now. Common.)
When receiving, I only felt heat. Their hands were certainly warm, but I'm having trouble differentiating that from simple biofeedback/hypnosis. I have a friend who learned to do this at physical sports therapy and know of someone else who can do it on command with traditional self-hypnosis. It seems that with all the expectation and belief and focus on energy flowing through hands, that they could easily warm up. The experience did feel good, but simply because it was nice to have human touch from warm hands from people I trust.
What ways could I try to explore this more? The test of whether it produces results doesn't seem sound either, b/c of placebo effects, limited people, controlling energy flow (I don't feel it flowing, so I couldn't tell if it's flowing or not).
Any thoughts on this?

First of all you did not tell us what kind of Reiki -- there are many. If you are referring to traditional Usui Reiki the person that gave you all those attunements made a very large mistake. They should be no more than 3 months apart and six is even better. If you had the first attunement, it should have opened your crown chakra 1/2 so energy can flow in. This should have produced some effects on you from not feeling well to being terribly thirsty. The new energy clears out the old. I am a RMT. I feel no tingling in my hands at all -- period!! However, if I do Reiki on someone and my hands get exceedingly warm I know I have found something that needs to be healed. I will usually ask the person what's going on right here and usually it is an injury that never healed. Reiki II is to send Reiki long distance. You should also have had profound physical effects from this attunement as it opens your crown chakra up 100% allowing all the energy in. The Master Teacher level is only if you wish to pass Reiki along. Also, when doing Reiki on other people, you HAVE TO BE WELL GROUNDED so you do not absorbe the negative energy. This is as simple as keeping a penny in your shoe, a small hematite in a pocket. Gardening is a wonderful way of grounding and hugging a tree is even better. Visualize or imagine yourself as only being a fiber optic cable passing along the good healing energy. Works wonders.
You do not need Reiki guides, Reiki power animals or anything else. Let your hands be your guide. To me that was a mistranslation from Japanese to English and should have read: Reiki glides - not guides. Know and understand your chakras well, keep them clean and in balance. For me, the easiest way is in the shower in the morning, clean pure water clearing out and washing all negativity, dirt down the drain.
I have a friend that just received her first attunement and NOTHING either. I know this lady and I know if she received a real attunement there would have been some major changes in her life. I told her I would be glad to reattune her for free on weekend when I am not busy. I hope this somewhat answers your questions. Best book is Essential Reiki but on the net you can find Vinny's and it was the second I believe. I think there was one published in Australia before that but it never left the ground.

Thanks.
It was actually only Level I attunement, but there were 3 different attunements over the course of the two days. For now, I'll keep doing it because my teacher said she could feel the energy flowing from me and my classmates said it made them feel better, but from my end it just feels like me giving them some thermal heat from concentrating on my hands and that's it.

The social tingling is caused by slightly bad posture putting pressure on nerves in the upper arms and neck. The position you were in when you did your Reiki simply produced a similar physical effect. You'll also notice that in both situations straightening your posture relieves the tingling immediately. If your teacher is telling you this is some sort of "energy" then get another teacher.

We now have two posts leading to somewhat the same conclusion -- get another RMT. Reiki does not have to be done standing up. You are allowed to sit in a chair with rollers -- feet, legs and arms uncrossed. What exactly did you think your teacher would say? Oh, gosh, gee whiz -- I guess I didn't do it right? Doing attunements is not an easy task. You should have even sensed in your mind your teacher's "soul - essence" during the attunement. As many attunements as I have had from different RMT's, I always get a physical reaction, except for the MT which is beyond wonderful. I remember very well my first attunement -- we had an hour lunch break and I had a small carton of yogurt. I didn't think I would make it through the attunement as I was pretty sure I was "going to toss my cookies". The sensation then passed. After the attunement we practiced on each other for 3-4 hours knowing our Reiki was pure and sure it worked. Every single one of us felt something during the attunement and working on each other! On another Reiki I attunement I was so thirsty for days -- could not get enough WATER. You should have felt something. Your energy had shifted. Your teacher should have told you how to help these effects. When scanning the body of another with your hands they should get VERY, VERY HOT WHEN YOU FIND SOMETHING THAT NEEDS HEALING. Concentrate on Reiki, draw it into you, feel it, rub your palms together to create friction - then work down the body. The energy itself just goes into the earth through the bottom of your feet. No Reiki is ever lost or left unused.

Gardening or hugging a tree I can understand. Walking barefoot likewise. But ow does this energy know what to do when it meets an unexpected penny sitting uncomfortably in your shoe? How does a penny in your shoe overcome your footwear's obvious insulating properties in the same way it might when tree hugging or gardening? How, for that matter, does it know the difference between hugging a tree, gardening or pretending to be an optoelectrical communications conduit? What form does this energy take? Is it measurable, or do you have to be told what it is you're supposed to be sensing it under your clearly commercial instruction?
Please forgive my pessimism. These are serious questions.

Look up copper's property for conducting electricity (helps get negative out of the practitioner's body faster). Electricity is energy just like Reiki is energy. As to hematite it is believed on ancient teachings that it absorbs negative energy. Probably doesn't but why take the chance on negative energy? I really do not want to absorb any negative energy. Most people in holistic work believe in these reasonings from Reiki to acupuncture. This is all assuming that the Reiki Practitioner is not working outside with the bare feet grounded to the earth. I don't know of anyone that does that. Reiki is probably as old as the world. It just happened to be rediscovered. Working in the soil and hugging a tree are excellent -- grounds the person back to the earth and the earth itself is chi. Trees grow in the earth for hundreds of years - chi. Go try it and feel it for yourself. Why does taking a bath with some salt from the sea and especially the Dead Sea help get rid of the ill effects from a Reiki attunement? I don't know. Why does ground organic Ginger to the same? I don't know. Some things just work. It's not just mental suggestion -- there is something very physical about it too. Just as Reiki is unexplainable, some of the Reiki traditions also are. I'm all for whatever works!

Hmmm...perhaps it was my instructors, then. I had two of them, who switched off on the attunements. Their instructors were attuned by the woman (I forget her name) who brought Reiki over from Japan. I don't know if that makes a difference, but I'd imagine there's fewer people in between to get the information/skills muddled in. The others in my class did feel things and some had emotional experiences.
I guess I"ll just keep practicing what I learned and hopefully be attuned, again, at some point.

Oh come on. If you rub your hands together then of course they'll feel warm. The friction causes the warmth, doesn't it. Try it now. Your perception of the warmth comes and goes depending on how long and how vigorously you rub, doesn't it. Putting a copper penny (which in the UK are only copper plated steel since about 1990 by the way - look THAT one up if you don't believe me) isn't going to do anything to earth even a moderate static charge. You need skin to earth contact for that, or several thousand volts to overcome your shoe's insulating properties - which youd burn your foot off by the way. All other forms of energy are measurable (except the sort that only exists in your head), so in what way is this stuff "negative" and what measures it other than you subjectively?
Interesting.
Stranger, you seem to think that if you put your hand in "very, very hot" water there will be no difference with water that is merely "warm."
Your own subjectivity, personal belief system, and dogma seems to be preventing you from expressing any form of objectivity.
Some subatomic particles have never been seen, only their effects on other things. By your definition, the belief in such things a quarks and mesons must only exist in one's head.

Don, that one really was NOT worth the effort of a reply IMHO! That's why I decided to let it die on it's own. It's obvious the poster is far from a Reiki Master Teacher.

I've studied Reiki and other energy practices.
Feeling heat, cold, tingling and etc. are all positive signs and things you should feel. The attunement ritual is generally not anything that will make you feel different. The important thing is to relax and allow the cosmic healing energy to pass through you. Practic you new gift and you will be amazed at the positive responses you get from other people.
The energy experience is not a big bam thing. Its subtle and feeling the energy current via reiki is not necessary. Neverhteless, when you work on others you will feel heat, cold and even metal electrical pricks.... These could be on different areas of the same person. As you practice on others and over time you will get more sensitive and be able to pick up on more subtle feelings and connections with others. All you have to do is do the different positions and sweep at the end. Just do it...

To what level of Reiki have you been attuned? It is quite obvious there are going to be changes in the body as Reiki flows in -- new energy the body had not had before getting rid of the old and installing the new -- a detox process as it were. If the hands become cold, it means there is NOTHING that needs healing!

I'm going to be "attuned" shortly. I'll let you know what I experience, if anything.

Well, I had my first ever attunement. :) And I did experience things. Mostly it was a pressure or tightness moving through my stomach and chest. You know how when you're really hungry your stomach feels hollow and kind of hurts? It was sort of like that, only I wasn't hungry. And it didn't really "hurt." It was a pressure. I also got very hot. All over. I was touching my skin to see, and everywhere I touched was hot, feverish. The back of my leg, my stomach, my chest, my forehead. Before it started, I was having trouble relaxing, my heart was beating way too fast, and I was feeling anxious. After it started, I felt calmer. Random things kept flitting in and out of my mind, and I couldn't control it, or hold a thought. Snippets of conversation, family members... I had intended to keep my eyes open, but they kept aching, and I closed them. I also felt an aching in my right hand, and a quick stab of pain in my ribcage.
Anyway, the second "it" was over, I knew. I could feel the difference between "it" and "not it." (By the way, this was a distance attunement.)

Update: in case anyone is interested! :)
I performed Reiki on four different people today, and three of them fell asleep. Two during, and one right after. I wonder what that means?? I did feel my hands getting warm. Warm, not hot.
One recipient was my mother. She said she liked it, could feel "tingling and warmth and energy" coming from my hands. COOL!! :D

What did I tell you? This is only the FIRST step. Just look into your future and get soooo excited that you are covered with goose bumps!!
You have someone resting, it is not unnatural for them to fall asleep. You don't need their minds. You just need your hands! Seems as if the Attunement went stunningly as I knew it would. C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are now a Reiki I and only two more to go. HUGS!! Anne :)

Thanks! :) I'm having fun. I had a wonderful conversation with my 16 year old nephew today, he's a complete skeptic, totally analytical and opinionated! I LOVE talking to him, we had so much fun arguing! He thinks Reiki is "mumbo jumbo" and yet he consented to have me work on his backache. It made him feel better, he declared the muscles less tense (and said he almost fell asleep but fought it!).
Then he poo-poo'd that it's any kind of energy. He denies that this universal energy even exists. He thinks it's like a "hot water bottle" effect. The proximity of my hands (the same as anyone's hands or any body part) generating heat. I thanked him for allowing me to be a hot water bottle surrogate! :)
Connie,
With respect to his back, does it matter if the effect is universal energy or 'hot water bottle'?
I would ask him, "Which is more important, to 'explain it away according to some preconcieved notion' or it to have a benificial effect?"
I wonder how disturbing would it be for him, to simply leave it as, "I dont know how it works."

Thanks, Skip. He and I, his name is Taylor, we'll have more conversations and I will put that to him. :) He has a wonderful mind, but it's a little rigid at this point. I discussed with him also the "we create our own reality" concept. He was super resistant. He criticised himself (I'm bad at math) and kept saying he was being a "realist" about it. I tried to convince him that he's limiting himself by saying that and that it's not true, or doesn't have to be. LOTS of arguing (debating) back and forth. He also doesn't believe hypnosis is real. But all our back and forth was good natured and he was smiling a lot. We both were.
Finally he became exasperated with the conversation and ran away. I told him when I am more skilled at hypnosis, I will give him a good demo. I think I did make a dent in his thinking, though. Planted a few seeds which might germinate into some thought in new directions on his part.

I had my second attunement tonight. :) This one was much more a pulsing. Mostly in the upper abdomen and the right side of my chest. It came in waves, stronger then weaker then stronger again. Like a heartbeat. Like something alive. But I didn't feel like it was my heartbeat.

I have one more reiki story to share. If someone had told me this story a few weeks ago, I'd have said: "What a nut!" or in polite parlance: "This strains my credibility!"
I've been weightlifting, and I've aggravated something in my left elbow and forearm. Tendons, muscles, I don't know what. It's been hurting. So, I decided to "reiki" myself there. I've been doing it off and on for a few days with my hand and the area does get warm. But it's still been hurting a bit.
Anyway, today, at work, I was leaning up on a file cabinet, going through some papers. My arms were close to my face, and I was inadvertently breathing on my left arm/elbow area. The whole area just started radiating with this intense heat. A startling amount of heat.
I thought the energy was supposed to come out of your hands, and I was reading up on how eventually you could beam it out of your eyeballs or other body parts. (That sounds so cool!) I had read also about breath being another way to transmit the energy--but I wasn't prepared for a demonstration that I can already DO this. It was shocking.
Anyway, I'm flexing and stretching my arm/elbow while I type this and it does seem less painful. There's still twinges.

Here's a reiki healing story!
I distance reiki'd my first animal yesterday. A co-worker's dog. A "shepherd" dog, 13 years old, jumped out of a second story window in a cabin. Nothing seemed to be broken, but the dog was "going downhill" fast--his wife had called him up hysterical from home. They had had other dogs die and she thought she knew the signs. My co-worker was extremely upset, leaving work early to take the dog to the vet, and commented that he was more attached to that dog than his 3 sons! Anyway, I reiki'd "Shadow" a couple times yesterday.
I didn't tell my co-worker I was doing this. Today I asked after the dog. He said the vet said the dog was going to be "just fine."

Hi Connie and everyone else.
I'm Frank, a psychic told me I would be a healer and I was 8 years old at the time and she she I would be a healer at the age of 45 lol.
Well when I turn'd 45 my wife had a friend and she is a Reiki Master and she invited her to meet me at our house.
Bridget attuned me and in the process stopped in about 30 seconds and told me I didn't need the attunement because I was already there.
But I told her to finnish the attunement and she did.
Found out both my grand father and great grand father where shaman healers in England and I sort of NDA whys got that from them also lol.
My very first Emergency with Reiki was my neighbor Dean who lives next door from us and during the summer she cut part of his middle finger and index fingers off with his lawn mower.
He went to the ER and when he came back that night he was in a lot of pain. He had his fingers bandaged and his arm up in the upright position because the pain was that back.
I ask him if you wanted me to use some Reiki on his fingers. He said he was in so much pain he would try anything.
So I put my palms near his bandaged fingers without touching them and within a few seconds the expression of pain on his face was gone.
I Reiki'd his hand and fingers for 45 minutes and did a session with him every other day for a week.
I told him at the end of week and he see's his doctor his fingers would not be swollen and not black and blue.
Well Dean and his wife Tracy saw his doctors and they took his bandages off.
The doctors where surprised. Deans fingers where not swollen and they were print pink.
Dean even tapped his fingers on the table and no pain. He even went golfing and played softball that same weekend.
That was one of many experiences with reiki.
Connie did you know you can send Reiki back in time or send it into the future for someone that requisted it. Did that works great and using your eyes and sending it visually.
Reiki has been great for me also.
Sincerely
Frank

Hi everyone, Frank Here.
I use a saragot object for a peson also. If the client isn't here and going to do a long distance healing I also reiki an object like a pillow or what I have is a very large white stuffed gorilla.
Then as I connect with my guides and healing angles before I send I request that this stuff toy gorilla will be ( ______________) so I say that person name and location 3 time in my mind and I put my hands on the gorillia and that person experiences and feels the reiki.
If person needs it on lower back I turn the toy garillia over and reiki its back and he or she feels it during the session.
I do reiki on paltalk chat room and as I send to the person in Italy or anwhere in the world they would go on mic in chat room and go on mic and tell us what they are feeling at that moment Im sending.
That way in the chat room and anyone in the room dosn't know what reiki is or what it can do they can hear it from that person as we are doing it.

Thanks for sharing the stories, Frank! :) Reiki has become very important to me, much much more so than I ever imagined. In fact, I was very resistant to learning it at all. Someone here (Thanks, Poodle!) pointed me in the direction of a teacher who is a lovely person and has had a massive impact on my life. I don't have ancestors who were "shamans" (not that I know of), *I* was the Shaman. (According to my teacher.)
I use reiki every single day! For manifesting things. For helping people. On myself. I love it. I HAVE been experimenting with sending it visually as well. In the olden days, every plant I ever had died, except for this one cactus! :D I've been reiki-ing my office plant visually, and it's time to get a bigger pot, it's doing so well.
It's interesting, Frank, your comment about your master telling you that you already knew reiki. Mine said the same. And I felt that, as well. That I didn't need to worry about the nitty gritty details (hand positions, or even the symbols, etc.), I had it all intuitively already. Shamballa energy, as well.
As far as sending through time, I haven't tried that. When my mother was dying, I reiki-d her nonstop for weeks. In person mostly, but also at a distance. For the distance work, I was using a picture of her from years and years ago. I showed the picture to some reiki compadres in class, and they wanted to know if I were sending back in time. Maybe I was!
My hubby cut his hand the other day with a kitchen knife and I had to rush him to the emergency room. I was freaking out, but I did reiki him. They asked him how bad it hurt, and he said not at all. We looked at it the other day. It's healing really, really well! :)
