Hi. Two nights ago I think I hypnotised a friend of mine. He did what i told him to do (while what I think was hypnotised, he placed his hands out infront of his body, after me telling him to) and he was talking to me more deeply than he usually did (he was one of those guys who never talks about feelings). However, he had had a few beers before hand. So did I hypnotise him, or was he just drunk??

Well, about Did I Hypnotise Him?, I don't really know. I'm no expert, but it really could be a lot of things. He might have been drunk, or lying, or really hypnotised. Did you try to hypnotise him before hand? If not, I personally don't think he was really hypnotised.

Is he hypnotised?
Use this test:

Tell the person "I'd like you to look into my eyes please" [so you can see their eye's pupils.]
Say: "I'm going to count from one to three.
On the count of three I will snap my fingers.
When my fingers snap, the lights will go out, and it will be totally dark in this room.
one... two... three... " [snap]
If the person is hypnotised, their pupils will enlarge because it is now dark.

First rule of ethics and common sense. Never use hypnosis were alcohol is in use. If you were a member of HSA and were caught under these circumstances, you would be banned from the society, and never allowed to rejoin. I am surprised that others haven't caught this. Or have things got slack since I retired? Terry

Terry, please explain why such a case would be so problematic? I'm a hypnosis noob, not questioning you, just asking why it would be bad so I know for the future.

Dear Mentalist,

It centers around what would be considered 'informed consent', and whether or not you had taken 'unfair' advantage.

As Skip so rightly puts it, it is a matter of informed consent, which may be doubted if the subject is under the influence, or considered as possibly under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and unable to consent in an informed manner.
The only time I ever had to terminate a member was under these circumstances, and the fact that he pressed the complaining party to accept his attempt to hypnotise her. We must remember to behave as professionals, and not do anything that might bring contempt upon our body, even if we are not a member of any recognised group. I point this out, because I feel we should never offer assistance to anyone who breaks our code. Yes, I am hot on ethics, but remember, it is due to the way we deport ourselves before the public, that we in Alberta and Ontario are supported by our Provincial Governments, and able to function openly and self police our members. If all do the same, we will be able eventually to be recognises by all Provinces, all States, and all Countries. We must also be supportive of one another, and this will only come when those who practise recognise the need of a code of ethics and obey them. Terry
