A friend of mine has a 9yo boy who is seriously hyper active. His school won't let him attend unless he is on drugs to slow him down.

I met with them yesterday & he won't sit still at all. He is very bright, has a perfect visual memory. His maths & reading are average for his age, it's just the
hyper activity.

I talked to his mum about his diet, they own a fruit shop & he eats excessive amounts of apples, mandarines, banana's etc, which of course are full of natural sugar. He does eat a little white bread, but his mother says they have very little preservatives etc in their diet.

His mum gave me a little bit of background & he has had it pretty hard, his dad doesn't want anything 2 do with him, he is the youngest of 4 & has an invalid older brother.

I think TLT would help but it wouldn't work with his cuurent attention span.

I considered suggesting that his mum give him his meds & then we do TLT, only problem is his mum is dead against them.

Have any of you works with similar kids & if so waht worked the best.

Thanks for your assistance.

I'd use hypnosis.
But obviously, not the standard relaxotherapy, but real hypnosis.
Of course, your milage may vary :)

Here is what I would respectfully suggest:
1) Inform the mother that she should follow the doctor's instructions.
2) Inform the mother that you will be glad to help her and her child if you get a referral from the doctor treating the boy.
3) After you get the referral, don't treat the diagnosis, treat the boy. ADD? ADHD? Hyperactivity? That's the MD's world, not the hypnotherapist's.
4) What are specific symptoms? Work with changing undesired behaviors using the techniques in which you are an expert.
5) If you only "think" TLT will help, the implication is you are not sure it will succeed. If you are sure it will work, use it. If you are sure hypnotherapy or NLP or some other technique will work, use those techniques. Hve confidence in yourself and in your client's ability to change.

Thanks Don & Merlin.

Merlin my concern with Hypnosis would be the induction. This kid won't sit still for more that 15 seconds. I know there are some good rapid inductions but that quick ?

Have you used hypnosis with a hyperactive child ?

Sorry posted the message before I was finished.

Don, thanks for your comments. I accept what you say and feel that I have many tools that can be used to assist the child provided I can get through to him & hold his attention for long enough.

I suppose I don't want to use him as a guinie pig, and as you say I have alack of confidence in my ability to make a significant difference.

I will give it some more thought.

Yes, there are inductions quicker than 15 seconds.
Yes, I have induced hypnosis in children.

What you need is to learn child-inductions.
Totally different from adult-style inductions.

These are a series of suggestions:

1) Gain report with the child
2) Ask him/her what they like. Games, cards, pictures, art, music, etc
3) Gain their attention by doing something like they like
4) Use ART. Help them to use their imagination by using art. Painting or drawing will help them. For example ask them to make a picture of how they would like the school to be. And in this school how would they like to be and do.
5) Use a Pendulum for the induction
6) Make it fun and use their language
7) Everything they do is OK. Give them space and bring them constantly into focus by gently reminding them what you are doing
8) Make it a game, fume, mysterious, and exciting
